It's officially summer, and with temperatures rising, we've got some tips for keeping your Smalls human-grade food as fresh as can be.
Smalls is preservative-free
By skipping fillers and preservatives, our recipes have more room for nutrients your cat actually needs. We gently cook human-grade ingredients, flash freeze them, and carefully pack them with dry ice and biodegradable insulation so they arrive to your doorstep as fresh as the day they were cooked.

Warm temperatures plus ice? Well, we know how that can go. But our team is taking additional precautions to ensure Smalls stays cold.
- Our Operations team might start adding the title of "meteorologist" to their resumes. We're working proactively to adjust dry ice quantities based on historic temperatures and upcoming weather forecasts.
- In our warehouses, boxes are carefully packed with biodegradable insulated liners and dry ice to maintain an appropriate temperature during transit and delivery.
- If you're starting to head back to an office or worry you might not be home for a delivery, our biodegradable insulation will keep cold locked in. If you aren't home to receive your box, we'll leave it at your door where it will be patiently waiting for you when you get home.

Fresh on arrival
One of the more fun features of dry ice is how it β¨sublimatesβ¨.
That said, if you open your box and there's no dry ice left, it's not the end of the world.
As long as the packets of wet food are either still frozen or at a temperature of 40ΒΊF or lower, they're perfectly safe to refreeze and serve as normal.
If the packets are warm, we recommend a quick smell-check. If the food is hot, the packets appear "puffed" with air, or if it smells off in any way, please dispose of the food and contact your Cat Concierge by emailing meow@smalls.com or texting 503-487-4303.
